A DARKLY FEELING AND PERCEIVING OYSTER

2023.03.31-2023.05.16

The third group exhibition of the OOPS project, “Oysters Sensing in the Dark,” opened on March 31 at O2art’s Shunyi space. The exhibition brings together four emerging artists—Bi Xiaohui, Lin Jingyun, Song Xiuyin, and Wang Qingyuan—each working with the traditional technique of gongbi painting, while exploring the evolving artistic language it generates within contemporary contexts, particularly in relation to emotion and the body.
The refined and lucid visual language of gongbi painting evokes the luster of shells. Its tactile quality seems to resonate subtly with the idealized, luminous human body—its creamy skin and even its pores—forming an ineffable connection. This delicate linear language runs throughout art history, underpinning numerous depictions of “perfection” and “love.” It is precisely this dual sensory experience—both visual and tactile—that continually fuels a fascination with such mysterious natural forms. Johann Gottfried Herder placed great importance on human sensibility and corporeality, likening the human being to “an oyster sensing in the dark.” In his view, the emergence of touch is directly tied to aesthetics (the science of perception). Within gongbi painting, what is most emphasized is the absolute control of the hand over the brush—an experience rooted in touch. Through meticulous line work and layered washes, the artists transmit the tactile experience of hand and tool into the visual realm. The inked silk surface carries an ambiguous texture, concealing a poetic and romantic imagination. As the origin of perception, “touch” is both a spontaneous bodily act and a metaphor woven into contemporary desires. When the artists’ individual states intersect with the broader social environment, a perceptual consciousness—formed through image and emotion—emerges. Within these intricate and disciplined brushstrokes, a quiet, unspoken spiritual tactility is awakened.
