I BUILT A CAVE
2024.03.16-2024.04.09
The exhibition takes its title from Eva Haupt’s new work this year, I Built A Cave And I Choose You. The work is filled with enigmatic forms that seem on the verge of generating new transformations at any moment, evoking Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” — humanity’s enduring pursuit of the knowable world from within the depths of the inner self. In the process of this “turning of the soul,” art becomes both a creator of vision and a force of intellectual liberation. Perception expands outward through emotional experience, seeking another kind of reality within states of drift and entanglement. Art thus emerges as a means of exploring and extending perception itself.
The four artists in this group exhibition each demonstrate a keen ability to capture and reconstruct fragmentary images, weaving unconscious experience and fleeting moments together with conscious thought and action to construct distinctive spiritual caves that transcend rational meaning.
The works presented by Chen Wei span more than a decade, and the juxtaposition of older and newer pieces carries the continuation and evolution of the artist’s thoughts. She has long excelled at opening pathways to the inner self through subtle details, employing refined technique to create imagery imbued with mystery and poetic resonance. Through her brush, the world around her is transformed into symbols that are quiet, melancholic, yet charged with rebellious force, continually questioning the individual’s existence and sense of belonging.
Eva Haupt seeks a dynamic balance between imagination and image. The visible and invisible aspects of everyday experience are consciously activated, while compositions that transcend perspectival logic and liberated use of color merge into fairy-tale-like scenes, giving rise to entirely new experiential worlds. In her works, Wo Xinyu depicts personal memories entangled across time and space. She imbues her paintings with intense dramatic tension and surrealist associations, unfolding an exploration of the beauty within human nature through her meticulous treatment of light. Wu Zejian focuses on self-exploration and emotional expression, approaching his practice through an almost diaristic perspective that probes the emotional exchanges between people. His restrained palette, subtle brushwork, and delicate textures conceal layers of intertwined emotions, giving rise to an atmosphere that is gentle yet threadlike in its sense of estrangement. Within themes of intimacy, solitude, and desire, he searches for a tranquil and comforting spiritual realm.
Although the artists employ vastly different painterly textures, fantastical visual elements, and diverse techniques, their works collectively evoke a resonance between the individual and the external world within an atmosphere of concealed ambiguity and emotional intimacy. It is through this resonance that perception and expression are set into motion, familiar memories overturned, and irretrievable moments rendered with acute sensory precision. By activating subconscious responses within the viewer, the works convey a renewed and diffused world of images, ultimately awakening deeper forms of empathy and consolation.
展览名源自艺术家Eva Haupt今年的新作“I Built A Cave And I Choose You”,这件作品中充满未知的形态似乎随时可能催生出新的变化,指向着柏拉图的“洞穴之喻”(Allegory of the Cave)——人的内心深处对可知世界的探求。
